Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Historic Site http://www.chicamacomico.net The seven buildings of this historic site, listed on both the national and state registers of historic places, comprise the most complete lifesaving station in the United States. The oldest structure, built in 1874, is under active restoration to its original condition. Visitors can view its Gothic architecture with post-and-lintel construction, seldom seen today. Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge http://www.fws.gov/peaisland/ This refuge was established in 1937 as a wintering sanctuary for waterfowl and is known as a “birder’s paradise” with a bird list of more than 365 species. It is an important wintering ground for tundra swans, snow geese, Canada geese, and more than 25 species of ducks. During the summer months several species of herons, egrets, and ibises nest in the impoundment and marsh areas along the sound. Terns, gulls, black skimmers, willets, black-necked stilts and other wading and shore birds nest on the refuge. There is a visitor center, trails, and numerous recreational opportunities.
