A celebration of the season in lights
With Slideshows
By IRENE NOLAN

When it comes to celebrating the Christmas season, Hatteras Island
villages are not that different from any other town in America.
As the brilliant hues of the winter sunsets begin to fade, the lights come on in villages up and down the island.
Some light displays are subdued and others are not. There are
white lights and colored lights and even some of the old-fashioned blue
lights. There are Santas, sleighs, reindeer, snowmen, Christmas
trees, choirs, angels, wreaths, and lots more.
The lights adorn business and homes and big homes and modest
homes. They are on Highway 12 and off the highway in old
Kinnakeet village, Buxton’s Back Road and Hatteras Pines, and
Hatteras village.
Two Island Free Press photographers set out to give you a tour of Hatteras Island lights.
Buddy Swain photographed Hatteras village in a slide show that he titled, “Signs of the Season.”
And Don Bowers traveled through the other Hatteras villages for a show he has titled, “The Battle of the Bulbs.”
It looks to us as if Salvo might win the Battle of the Bulbs on Hatteras.
If you live here or are visiting soon, you can travel the highways and
back roads and see the lights for yourselves. If you can’t
be here for the holidays, we hope you enjoy our photographs of what the
island looks like during the holiday season.
And if you know a terrific display of holiday lights that isn’t
on these slide shows, please e-mail us a photo at
editor@islandfreepress.org.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us at The Island Free Press.
