Santa Claus came to town
Santa has had a busy week on Hatteras Island.
Breakfast with Santa, a fundraiser for the Hatteras Community Preschool, was held at the Breakwater Restaurant, in Hatteras on Saturday,
Dec. 15. Along with selling tickets for the breakfast, the fundraiser
included a raffle and photos with Santa. April Oden, of Hatteras, was
this year's organizer and reports that more than $1,300 was raised from
this event to help the preschool provide scholarships for students and
to provide needed financial assistance for the preschool's operation.
On
Monday afternoon, Dec. 17, Santa was at the Fessenden Center. Children
came to meet Santa, tell him what they want for Christmas, and have
their picture taken. This is one of the many holiday events sponsored
by Dare County Parks and Recreation. Click Here For Slideshow

A little girl’s memory of a very special Hatteras Christmas
Mary Elizabeth
Gray was born on Hatteras Island in 1929 in a house on a high ridge in
Buxton that belonged to her grandparents. After living away from
Hatteras for a number of years, she moved back and today lives in the
house that her father, Rufman Gray, built in 1932. This is her
story of a Christmas in the 1930s when she says she was not quite 10
years old. Her family attended the Methodist Church in Buxton, which
was located near the present-day Buxton United Methodist Church.
At that time, she says, it was a wooden, frame building with kerosene
lamps that was heated with a wood stove and looked much like Little
Grove United Methodist Church in Frisco. ...Read More
