Yellow
House Ministry will be part of Festival of Trees

The Yellow
House Ministry of Hatteras Island will participate in the Festival of
Trees, sponsored by Outer Banks Hotline, from Thursday, Nov. 29,
through Saturday, Dec. 1, behind the Brewing Station in Kill Devil
Hills. The hours on Thursday and Friday are noon until 9 p.m., and on
Saturday, the hours are noon until 3 p.m. with a benefit auction at 8
p.m.
Festival of Trees is a community fundraiser that supports programming,
services, shelter, training, information and resources to address
domestic and sexual violence in the Outer Banks. It features Christmas
trees decorated by many community organizations and individuals that
are raffled to benefit the community.
As part of its mission, Yellow House Ministry is selling raffle tickets
at $1 each for the opportunity to win a long list of items with only
one winning ticket. The winner of the raffle gets the fully
decorated Christmas tree, which will be displayed at the Festival of
Trees, and many other gifts donated by island businesses and
individuals. A list of the donated items follows this article.
You may purchase tickets in advance at the following places: Island
Perks Coffee Shop in Frisco, Uncle Eddy’s Ice Cream Parlor
and Hotline Thrift Shop in Buxton, Island Treasures Gift Shop and The
Gaskins Gallery and Country Elegance in Avon. For a preview of the
decorated tree, visit Country Elegance in Avon. All proceeds from the
sale of these tickets will go to the Yellow House Ministry to fund its
many projects throughout the year.
The Yellow House Ministry is a non-profit, non-denominational,
faith-based organization that was born out of a desire to reach out,
through support and love, to the young people of Hatteras Island.
The YHM was recently awarded a $12,500.00 grant from the University
Health Systems Foundation and the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust in
partnership with the Outer Banks Hospital’s Development
Council. This grant will provide funding for individual and group
substance abuse counseling. In January, 2008, Andrea Facci, Ph.D., will
conduct a weekly group session in Frisco for women who are in a
relationship with men with chemical dependency. Other planned sessions
will be announced at a later date.
As part of the Dare County Substance Abuse Task Force, The YHM has
actively been involved in the drug prevention and intervention programs
of Dare County. The ministry recently made 5,000 bracelets with an
attached bookmark that is being distributed to all Dare students.
The slogan “live above board” is part of the
group’s campaign -- “You must be the change you
wish to see in the world—live above board”.
Yellow House Ministry recently participated in Dare County Recovery
Month events, including the Art Show and Event at the YMCA in Nags
Head, the Skate Park event held at the Fessenden Center in Buxton, and
the Dare CASA Breakfast/Seminar held at the Clarion Hotel in Kill Devil
Hills.
The ministry supports the Adopt-a-Highway Clean Sweep Program and
maintains a portion of Highway 12 between Avon and Salvo. A landscaping
project was recently completed at the Avon Fire Station in which
shrubs, trees, and flowers were planted.
Yellow House Ministry has distributed more than 350 surfer bibles to
young people with the encouragement that “There is hope for
your future, says the Lord…” Jeremiah 31:17.
