Halloween in Hatteras village… .A SLIDE SHOW

Halloween on Hatteras Island was much like it was in the rest of the country.  There were children who did the traditional knocking on the doors of their neighbors for treats, and there were parties in churches, fire stations, the Coast Guard Station in Hatteras village, and other venues.

On Halloween night, youngsters in Hatteras village started their journey at the Fire Station, where they received boxes to collect money for UNICEF, got treats, and ate hot dogs.  Then they headed out on their trick-or-treating adventure.

Perhaps because the old village is so compact and off the highway, it’s a favorite for Halloween.  It’s like a neighborhood that many of us remember from our childhood. One of the premier areas is the walk down Kohler Road, next to the Burrus Red & White Supermarket, and on the short streets off Kohler.

The residents decorate with ghosts, goblins, bats in the trees, and lighted pumpkins along the road.  At a few of the homes, there are even sound effects, which delight some of the older children and terrify some of the younger ones.

The youngsters who were trick or treating ranged in age from toddlers who had to be carried by parents, pushed in strollers, or pulled in wagons to teen-agers who wanted amusement and entertainment.  They came dressed as ghosts and goblins and vampires, as Spiderman and Tinkerbell, as Dorothy and the scarecrow from “The Wizard of Oz,” and as cheerleaders, movie stars, princesses, pirates, and monsters.

It was a time for visiting and showing off the children for the parents and for collecting treats and Halloween memories for the children.

It was just exactly the way that Halloween in a small island village should be.
