Kids’ fishing contest has lots of winners
By IRENE NOLAN
Some
84 children participated in the Hatteras Island Cancer
Foundation’s annual kids’ fishing tournament on
Saturday,
Sept. 22, at the Cape Hatteras Fishing Pier, also known as the Frisco
Pier.
The morning dawned gray and drizzly, and clouds threatened the
festivities. But before the contest, which began at 10 and
ended
at noon, was over, the sun was shining.
The youngsters fished and enjoyed hot dogs and drinks donated by island
businesses.
The contents winners were:
Kindergarten through second grade
Biggest Fish: first place to Hannah Barnett and second to
Emma
Chapin. The most fish awards went to Simon Wilson for first
place
and Max Bigney in second.
Third through fifth grades
Biggest Fish: first place to Christian Meekins and second to
William Willis. Most fish awards to John O’Neil for
first
and Indica Willis for second.
Sixth through eighth grades
Biggest Fish: first place to Josh Willis and second to Andrea
Wilson. Most Fish awards to Josh Willis for first and J.B. Pitteiti for
second.
Prizes for the contest were donated by more than 40 local businesses
The trophies were donated by Jodi Midgett. Bait, rods, and
reels
came from Frank and Fran's tackle shop in Avon and Teach's Lair Marina
in Hatteras.
Food and drinks were donated by Risky Business Seafood, Burrus Red
&White Supermarket in Hatteras, and Food Lion in Avon.
The cancer foundation also thanks Angela Gaskill and Dominick Vince at
the Frisco Pier for their help and the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club for
providing tackle and judging.
All proceeds benefit the cancer foundation, which helps Hatteras cancer
patients pay for medical care and prescription drugs that
aren’t
covered by insurance and also assists patients with the cost of travel
for medical treatment.
