The
third annual Day at the Docks – A Celebration of Hatteras Island
Watermen—will be on Saturday, Sept. 15, on the Hatteras village
waterfront from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The
day brings local fishing families and tourists together on the
waterfront where commercial fishing boats, charter boats, and fishing
gear are displayed. Century-old workboats, including a
traditional North Carolina shad boat, dock next to modern,
state-of-the-art vessels.
Captains
and crews demonstrate the tools and skills working watermen use at sea.
Exhibits feature pound nets, gill nets, trawl nets, tuna kites, and
circle hooks.
Fishermen
and visitors are invited to compete in a net hanging contest, a
concrete marlin competition, and a survival suit race.
Professional
and home chefs square off in a chowder cook-off, and Outer Banks
families share their special seafood cooking techniques.
Special
activities for children include a fishing contest, fish identification
game, blue crab races, a touch tank, and a scavenger hunt.
Exhibits
on fishing regulations, boating safety, seafood recipes, and marine
resource conservation are in the big tent, while the working waterfront
stage features musicians and storytellers throughout the day.
There is no admission charge. Lunch featuring fresh local seafood is available at a modest charge.
Guests
are also invited to witness the parade of local fishing boats sailing
into the harbor at 5:45 p.m. for the blessing of the fleet at
6:15. This year, a community choir will sing during the parade
and blessing.

entertain, and enrich the lives of young people. KOS offers an
acting training program with a combination of classroom and performance
work for students at any level, from preschool (age 4) through grade
12. The youngsters learn all aspects of theater performance,
incorporating work on the voice, body, and imagination by means of a
variety of drama exercise and games appropriate to the grade level.

more information or to register for fall classes, please contact
Vanessa Cole at 995-6991 or speak to her after the performances.
