James Gold Cornette
OCRACOKE
-- James Gold Cornette, 67, comfortably passed from this world to the
next on Sept. 3, 2010, leaving a wake of giggling nurses and healthcare
providers shaking their heads. He was the son of Grady and
Elaine
Cornette and husband of the incredibly tolerant Rebecca Swanzey
Cornette.
James grew up in Charlotte, where he was a star baseball player and
athlete in high school and college. He was on his way to the
major leagues when knee injuries sent him down his other pathway as a
teacher. He taught in tough Charlotte City Schools before
settling with his young family on Ocracoke, where he and Becky raised
their three boys. He completed his 30-year career as a
teacher,
teaching from one generation through the other at Ocracoke
School.
James lived his life by surrounding himself in fun, sarcasm, and humor,
always first draw with the one-liner. He lived to poke fun
with
or brighten the moment of anyone having a bad day. A talented
closet artist, he painted and drew Patrick and “Spongesquare Bobpants,”
creating their new adventures to the delight of his
grandkids.
James always had a soft spot for anyone in need and was a champion for
the underdog. He was actually seen negotiating Mexican street
vendors up on their prices because he thought they needed the
additional pesos.
He is preceded in death by his parents and wife. He is
survived
by his brother Milton (Myrtle) and family of Charlotte and his sons,
Jim (Ellen) Cornette of Hampstead, Eric (Katie) of Fountain, and Daniel
(Patricia) of Boone. He is missed tremendously by his family,
but
especially by his grandkids, Lisa, Pedro, CJ, Frazer, and
great-grandkids Spencer and Camden.
His legacy remains within all of the hearts that he touched, as well as
the school kids that he worked to start their lives out “Tipper
Topper!”
A celebration of James’ life will be held at 3 p.m.on Thursday, Sept.
9, at Ocracoke United Methodist Church. There will be a time
of
visitation from 2 to 3:00 p.m. just before the service. In

A celebration of the life of Cathy Lynn Burrus Smith will be on
Saturday, Aug. 28, at 1 p.m. at the Buxton United Methodist
Church. The service will be conducted by the Rev. Cory Oliver
and
the Rev. Dwight Burrus. It will be followed by a committal
service with military honors in the Quidley Cemetery in Buxton, where
Cathy Lynn will be buried beside her father, Conrad Burrus, Sr., and
her brother, Conrad Burrus, Jr.
Cathy Lynn, 50, died in a tragic accident on Thursday, July 22, 2010,
in Buxton while she was visiting her mother.
She was the daughter of Cathy Burrus of Buxton and late Conrad Burrus
Sr. and the wife of William P. Smith of Orange Park, Fla.
Cathy Lynn was born on Sept. 1, 1959 in Victoria, Tex., and grew up on
Hatteras Island, her father’s home and her mother’s adopted
home.
She graduated from Cape Hatteras School in 1977, attended Methodist
College in Fayetteville, N.C., and joined the U.S. Navy in
1986.
She served as an Oceanographic Technician Analyst in Iceland and Wales
and as an Aviations Electronic Technician in Jacksonville, Fla., until
her retirement from the Navy as a Petty Office Second Class in 1994.
After her retirement from the Navy, Cathy Lynn earned her bachelor’s
degree with honors from University of Phoenix and was almost finished
with her master’s degree. She worked as a project manager for Verizon
Business, where she handled the account for CSX, a large transportation
company based in Jacksonville.
She was married to Bill Smith in May, 1994, at the Buxton United
Methodist Church, and they lived in Orange Park with their four
dogs. They hosted several foreign exchange students, and
Cathy
Lynn enjoyed her new hobby of riding her Harley with Bill.
Cathy Lynn was baptized in the brand-new Buxton United Methodist Church
on April 2, 1961, and joined the church on April 2, 1972. She
was

Lucy
Luffman Dearing
CHAPEL
HILL, N.C. -- Lucy Luffman Dearing, cherished wife, sister, mother and
grandmother died July 5, 2010 after a long illness at Duke Hospice in
Hillsborough. She was born May 28, 1934 to Winfrey and
Butrice
Luffman of State Road, N.C., the youngest of three sisters.
From
the beginning, Lucy was always a champion for anyone that needed help
and was the first to stand up for anyone treated badly, even in
elementary school. She could often be found on Sundays, still
dressed in her Sunday School clothes, climbing her father's cherry
trees to eat the cherries before they were picked. She
inherited
from her father a sense of humor that enabled her to laugh in even the
hardest situations.
She
endured two years at Mars Hill College, and then was able to transfer
to UNC-Chapel Hill, where she met her "living, breathing doll," John
Proctor Dearing. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from UNC with a
B.A. in psychology, and married John on June 1, 1957. Lucy
and
John became teachers, first in West Yadkin, N.C., and then, in a
wondrous twist of fate, they moved to Ocracoke to teach at the Ocracoke
School.
They
both fell in love with the island and its people, and even after moving
to Massachusetts to teach at the Stockbridge School, they returned to
their home, the Dia Bando Cottage, at every opportunity. Lucy
and
John loved to sail together on the Pamlico Sound for hours and were
well known to local fishermen and park rangers. She ended her
teaching career at the Phelps School in Malvern, Pa., and then she and
John retired in 1996 and returned to Ocracoke.
They
remained there until, due to declining health, they moved back to
Chapel Hill, where they first met. She was grateful to have
more
time to get to know and love her granddaughter. She was the
heart
of her family. Her greatest teaching was teaching her husband
and
children about love. In a family that loves music, she was
the
steady alto that kept us together.
She
is survived by her sisters, Winnie Luffman and Jean Humber; her
brother-in-law John Humber; her daughters, Lori Sandridge, Rachel
Pakenham, and Briana Dearing; her sons-in-law Benji Sandridge, Jim
Pakenham, and Tim Benton; her granddaughter, Aissa Dearing-Benton, and
her most beloved husband John.
She
kept her sense of humor to the last, telling her family shortly before
she died, the punchline to an old family joke, “Well, we've always been
a morose bunch.”
