Buxton team scores a second consecutive win in Hatteras tournament
The
Sandfiddlers of Buxton won the men’s division of the Hatteras
Village Invitational Surf Fishing Tournament for the second year in a
row.
The top team in the women’s division was the Queen Mackerals of Nags Head.
The tournament teams fished Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11 and 12, and
for a change, the anglers had good weather and caught a lot of fish.
The Sandfiddlers caught 117 fish for a total of 338 points. The team
captain is Eddie Ochs and members are Buddy Jennette, Tim Wilson,
Zander Brody, Andy Stephenson, and David Carangi.
The Queen Mackerals caught 23 fish for a total of 71
points. The team’s captain is Peggy Bird and members
are Linda Harper, Susie Von Suskil, Dee Deaton,
Barbara Daniel, and Betty Wright.
The Hatteras village tournament has been plagued with bad weather in
recent years. In 2003, it was cancelled after Hurricane
Isabel. In 2007, Tropical Storm Gabrielle brought wind and high
seas to the tournament, and last year, the contest was reduced to only
one session when seashore beaches were closed because of Tropical Storm
Hanna.
This year, however, the weather turned in favor of the 80 teams of six anglers each that registered to fish.
A non-tropical coastal low brought high seas, record rainfall, and wind
to Hatteras for most of last week, but by Friday the weather was partly
sunny, though still breezy. Saturday was a blue-sky day with warm
temperatures and light winds.
Obviously, the weather was just right for catching fish.
The second place team in the men’s division was the Riverside
Rats of Kill Devil Hill with 114 fish for 305 points. The captain
is Mark Brown and team members are Duncan Aydlett, Sam Joms, Jim
Ambrose, Doug Yoder, and David Ambrose.
Third place in the men’s division was won by the Delaware Mobile
Surf Fishermen of Lewes, Del., with 90 fish and 260 points. The team is
led by Capt. Dave Doganicit and members are Shaun Smith, Martin Kris,
Keith Sahmerre, John Mead, and Bruce West.
Second place in the women’s division went to the Black Beard
Babes of Kill Devil Hills with 25 fish and 63 points. The captain
is Joan Canipe, and team members are Cathy Bontemps, Dorinda Franklin,
Melinda Hoffman, Denise Jones, and Donna Voshell.
The third place team in the women’s division was the Hatterascals
of Hatteras with 14 fish for 58 points. Anne Styron and Ruby Creason
are team captains and members are Sue Styron, Carol McCracken, Rossie
Jackson, Roberta Midgett, and Carol Dillon.
The largest fish in the men’s division was a 24-inch puppy drum
caught by Jimmy Jacksons. Honors in the women’s division went to
Sara Warren for a 22 3/4-inch drum.
Team Tar Heel from Durham, N.C., won the first annual mullet
toss. The team's prize is free entry in the 2010 Hatteras Village
Surf Fishing Tournament.
