Stand in the Sand 2 fundraiser will be on Sunday, Sept. 6

Stand in the Sand 2: Beach Bums Barbecue is set for Sunday, Sept. 6, beginning at noon at the Fessenden Center on Highway 12 in Buxton.

The event is a fundraiser for the Cape Hatteras Access Preservation Alliance, which raises money to defend open and free access on the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Barbecue plates will be served from noon until they run out, which might be late afternoon or early evening. Plates of barbecued pork or chicken with sides, such as potato salad, slaw, and baked beans, will be $8.

In addition, there will be baked goods for sale, games for children, a raffle, bands, and local artists and other vendors, and a dance in the evening, from 6:30 until 10 p.m.

There will also probably be a few political speeches about the importance of beach access to islanders, visitors, and businesses.

“While there will be many opportunities to reach beachgoers through fishing tournaments and other activities this fall,” said Stand in the Sand organizer Rob Alderman, “this will be one of the last chances of the season to reach islanders and visitors about the potential for overturning the consent decree with the bills in Congress and informing them on how important it will be to partake in the public comment of the upcoming release of the proposed National Park Service plan for off-road vehicle regulation.”

So, he said, the barbecue is as much for raising public awareness as it is raising funds.

Parking will be available on the property north of the Fessenden Center and across from the Outer Banks Motel.  The area is adjacent to the Fessenden Center.

Alderman said CHAPA is still seeking contributions from businesses for the raffle and other funding for the event.

“Any and all businesses on the Outer Banks are invited to take part in our vendor areas,” Alderman added, “and while we have a great deal of space, we are still semi-limited to the number of businesses we can allow. So, if you are interested then please contact me, and I can give you further information and/or reserve you a spot.”

And volunteers are still needed.

There will be a meeting for volunteers on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 6 p.m. at The Cape Hatteras Anglers Club in Buxton.

Alderman, who is the host and producer of the” The Outer Banks Angler” fishing program and the owner of The Outer Banks Angler store located in Buxton, organized the first Stand in the Sand barbecue in June of 2008.  The event raised about $17,000 for CHAPA.
