Buxton’s lifeguarded beach is closed for the season
Cape
Hatteras National Seashore lifeguarded beach operations at Buxton
Beach, adjacent to the Old Cape Hatteras Lighthouse site, closed
Friday, Aug. 21, for the season.
National Park Service lifeguard operations at Coquina Beach on Bodie
Island and Ocracoke Beach on Ocracoke Island will continue through
Labor Day, Sept. 7. The hours of operation are 10 a.m. until 5:30
p.m.
Cyndy Holda, assistant to Park Service Supt. Mike Murray and NPS
community liaison, said that lifeguards are leaving to return to school
and there were not enough of them to keep the three beaches open.
She said Coquina Beach and Ocracoke Beach have higher visitation
numbers and that is why personnel were sent to those two sites.
Fall visitors are reminded to check with local weather sources for
updated surf and rip current conditions before going to the
beach.
“Planning your visit to Cape Hatteras National Seashore will
enhance your enjoyment and your safety,” the Park Service said in
a media release. “Please observe all rules and regulations for
your safety. Know your limits and understand the hazards.
For more information on rip currents, check the website at www.ripcurrents.noaa.gov.”
