Delivery truck crashes in Buxton, cuts off power to several villages

A delivery truck for the Maola Milk and Ice Cream Co. overturned early this morning on Highway 12 in Buxton, near the Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies.

No one was injured in the accident, though power was cut off to areas of Buxton and Frisco for about 45 minutes, and traffic was backed up in the area for a mile or more about noon as the truck was moved onto a flatbed truck to be towed off the island.

The truck ran off the right shoulder of the highway and overturned on the driver’s side, according to North Carolina state trooper Donald Kirk Hensley. The accident was reported at about 4:50 a.m.

The truck took down three power poles, according to Lonnie Moore, manager of engineering and operations for the Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative.

Two of the poles, Moore said, belonged to CHEC, and another, a concrete pole, belonged to Dare County.

Power was out to the northern parts of Frisco and in Buxton from Light Plant Road south from 4:47 until 5:33 a.m.

Moore said that power was still not restored to the school this afternoon.  No one was working there, he said, and power would be restored on Monday.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol, Dare County Sheriff’s Office, Buxton Volunteer Fire Department, Dare County Emergency Medical Services, and Hatteras Island Rescue Squad responded to the call.

According to Bob Helle of the rescue squad there were power poles and wires all over the accident scene.

First responders, he said, used a fire axe to knock out the windshield of the truck and provide a safe exit for the driver.

According to state trooper Hensley, the driver, Marcies Spodedecki, 27, of Manteo, who is employed by Maola, was charged with failing to maintain lane control.
