Oceanfront house in Avon destroyed by fire

By IRENE NOLAN

The cause of a fire early Tuesday morning, April 28, that destroyed an oceanfront house in Avon is still being investigated, according to Dare County Fire Marshal Doug Remaley.

Remaley said both his office and the Dare County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire.

The six-bedroom house, a vacation rental on Oceanview Drive in Kinnakeet Shores, was not occupied at the time of the fire, and, Remaley said, had not been occupied since April 11.

“We’re looking at all the aspects,” he said. ”Everything is accidental until proven suspicious.”

The fire was reported at 2:06 a.m. Tuesday morning, Remaley said.  Avon, Salvo, Buxton, and Frisco fire departments responded, and had the blaze under control in about an hour.

The house was totally destroyed.

But, in part because the winds were lighter than they had been over the weekend, the houses on either side were mostly spared.  They had “slight” damage, Remaley said.

“The fire departments,” he said, “did an excellent job of protecting the adjacent houses.”

One of the two adjacent houses was occupied, and the residents were evacuated as a precaution.

The fire departments had the blaze completely extinguished by about 5 a.m.
