Seafood marketing workshop scheduled for February

Are you interested in attracting new consumers and growing your business? Discover how by attending a North Carolina Seafood Marketing Workshop scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 3 and 4, at the NOAA National Center for Coastal Fisheries and Habitat Research in Beaufort.

Held for the first time in Wilmington last year, the workshop focuses on helping North Carolina fishermen and seafood dealers to better understand customers and to diversify marketing techniques.

“The workshop provides an opportunity for those in the seafood industry to learn from and network with successful seafood entrepreneurs that have developed business models that satisfy the needs of their customers,” explains Scott Baker, Sea Grant fisheries specialist and workshop organizer.

The event, from noon Feb. 3 to noon on Feb. 4, will be a mix of short presentations and case studies focused on consumer preferences, seafood branding, free marketing opportunities, and the importance of building and maintaining business-to-business and business-to-client relationships.

“The seafood industry is changing,” Baker says. “We hope that the materials covered in this workshop will better prepare our industry to adjust business operations as necessary to take advantage of changing consumer trends.”

The 2009 Seafood Marketing Workshop is a cooperative effort among North Carolina Sea Grant, the N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries, and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Funding is provided by the Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service, and is administered by the Southern Risk Management Education Center.

The workshop is free, but registration is required. Participants are responsible for arranging their own accommodations. To register for the workshop, contact Scott Baker at 910/962-2492 or bakers@uncw.edu, or Sara Mirabilio at 252/475-3663 or saram@csi.northcarolina.edu.
