Locomotion’s first block party is deemed a success
. . .WITH SLIDE SHOW

Locomotion, Hatteras Island’s teen organization, sponsored its first Block Party on Friday, Nov. 7, after the Cape Hatteras Secondary School of Coastal Studies’ last football game of the regular season.

“The football game was not a victory for us,” said Kathy Kiddy, Locomotion’s executive director, “but the night was a huge success.”

Even the weather couldn’t spoil the event.

The Block Party was originally scheduled outdoors at the Osprey Shopping Center in Buxton.  However, because of the week’s heavy rain, it was moved indoors to the Fessenden Center.

The event was hosted by Leo Palazzolo, owner of Papa Nino’s Pizza at the Osprey center. Papa Nino’s supplied pizzas, subs, trays of cheese, veggies and meat, chips, and sodas. Buxton United Methodist Church members supplied desserts of all kinds.

Seventy-three high school students attended the party and danced to the music of the local band, Low Standards.

Four students won door prizes of $20 gas cards, and another student won a cash prize for being the most spirited attendee.

“Teens left the building with smiles on their faces and not only from a great night, but because their hands were full of sweet treats,” Kiddy said.

Kiddy said Locomotion is grateful to Scott and Carol Busby, owners of the Osprey Shopping Center, and to the staff of the county-operated Fessenden Center. And, she said, the event would not have been possible without the support of Betsy Gwin, parent and CHSSCS counselor.

“Because of the grandeur of the night,” Kiddy said, “Locomotion would like to host another event this winter for not only high school students but for the entire community, as the band has a huge following among those who are now adults.”
