Electronic vehicle inspections will begin Nov. 1

You will no longer need a vehicle safety windshield sticker under a new system being set up by the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles. However, you will not be able to renew your vehicle registration until you have had the vehicle safety check.

DMV’s new electronic vehicle inspection program will go online Nov. 1, one month after the original Oct. 1 launch date, to allow additional time to receive and install computers throughout the state. The computers will electronically connect more than 2,300 safety-only inspection stations that were not previously linked to DMV.

Electronic vehicle inspections will mean vehicles that undergo an emissions or safety inspection on or after Nov. 1, 2008, will no longer receive a windshield sticker. After that date, the vehicle’s inspection will be synchronized to be due the same month as the vehicle’s registration renewal each year.

Synchronizing each vehicle’s inspection and registration dates is expected to increase compliance with the state’s inspection program and help benefit North Carolina’s air quality and highway safety. Over the synchronization period, no vehicle will have to be inspected more than once in a 12-month period.

As part of the new program, safety and emissions inspection stations will enter inspection results into the DMV vehicle registration database. Vehicle owners will be able to renew their registration only after their vehicle has been inspected. At the program’s start, nearly 7,000 safety and emissions inspection stations will be connected to the database.

DMV has trained more than 6,500 technicians, instructors, and DMV staff across the state for the changeover and was to complete testing of new software by Oct. 1.

The cost of safety-only inspections increased from $9.10 to $13.60 on Oct. 1.

More information about the new inspection program can be found on the agency’s Web site at http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/vehicle_services/emissioninspection/nomoresticker/ or by calling 1-888-999-3044.
