Bodie Island spit has re-opened to ORVs
Bodie Island spit has reopened to off-road vehicle (ORV) access.
The reopening of 0.5 of a mile of shoreline provides access to Oregon
Inlet, a prime fall fishing area within Cape Hatteras National
Seashore. The ocean shoreline is open from Ramp 4 south for 2.1
miles to Oregon Inlet and from Ramp 4 north for 2.1 miles.
The pre-nesting closure, which was established in late March and
includes interior sections of the point, will transition to the
non-breeding winter resource protection area status and is posted
accordingly with signs and symbolic fencing. This area is closed
to vehicles, pedestrians, and all pets. The shoreline is now open
to ORV traffic from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m. daily. The nighttime
prohibition on beach driving is still in effect throughout the seashore
from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m.
In the past month the Park Service has reopened many areas that were
closed for nesting shorebirds and colonial waterbirds – including
Cape Point, South Beach in the Frisco area, and South Point of Ocracoke.
The bird nesting season has ended, but there are still sea turtle nests
on the seashore that will continue to close some sections of the
beach. The closures are smaller than resource closures for birds,
but at times, they might block access to some beaches.
For more information on closures for turtle nesting, see the Park
Service’s Beach Access Report on the Beach Access Issues Page or
the Google maps in the red bar at the top of that page.
